Safari Highlights
Rwanda is indeed a unique Safari destination in Africa and a home to the critically endangered Mountain Gorillas. This safari will give you the opportunity to take game drives in Akagera National Park, track the gentle Giants (Mountain Gorillas) in Volcanoes National park, excellent bird watching, cultural excursions and Nature walks. We shall also have an excursion to the grave of famed primatologist Dian Fossey, who dedicated her life to the conservation and protection of Mountain Gorillas. A veterinarian from the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project shall make our safari enjoyable and informative by giving details about some of the threats facing these incredible animals.

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
Day 2: Depart Kigali for Akagera National Park – Evening Game drive
Day 3: Full day in Akagera – Game drive and Boat trip
Day 4: Depart for Parc National des Volcans
Day 5: Gorilla tracking Adventure

Detailed Safari itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Kigali Airport
Upon arrival in Rwanda, you will meet your driver guide at the airport and then transfer to Hotel des Mille Collines or Iris Guest House in Kigali. You will be briefed about the safari as you prepare your self to explore all the best Rwanda has to offer.

Day 2: Kigali – Akagera National park
your driver guide will pick you from your Hotel in the morning after breakfast, start a 2-hour drive eastwards to Akagera National Park near Tanzania boarder. Along the journey, you will be exposed to beautiful scenic viewing. Check-in Akagera Game Lodge, relax wait for lunch and proceed for a game drive by late afternoon before sunset. Return for diner and overnight at Akagera Lodge.
Day 3: Game drive and Boat trip: Akagera National Park
Wake up early for a cup of tea / coffee and proceed for a morning game drive to catch up with early raisers and predators returning to their hideouts. The game drive will reward you with chances to see a variety elephants, buffalos, lions, Maasai giraffe, gazelles, impala, baboons, oribi, Butchel’s zebra, topi, bush baby, leopard and bushbuck among others.
Return to the Lodge for late breakfast and relax as we wait for lunch. Later this afternoon we may enjoy a Boat ride on Lake Ihema, which will reward you with large number of hippos, huge Nile crocodiles and about 525 bird species. Dinner and overnight at the Lodge.

Day 4: Akagera National Park - Volcanoes National Park
Have early breakfast and drive back to Kigali, visit the Genocide Memorial, where you will hear stories of survival and the heart-warming stories of recovery and rebuilding hope.  Have lunch, and then proceed north-wards through the beautiful terraced hillsides of Rwanda's landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome volcanoes with a clear view of about 5 peaks. Settle into Kinigi Guest House or Virunga Lodge overlooking the twin lakes of Ruhondo and Bulera.

Day 5: Gorilla Tracking - Parc National des Volcans
This the day for your first Gorilla tracking excursion: We will wake-up early for breakfast, drive to Kinigi station (with packed lunch and water) for a 30 minutes briefing about the ‘Dos’ and ‘Don’ts’ while with gorillas. There after, join your trackers and head up the slopes of the Forest to visit one of the habituated groups of gorillas. The trek is quite strenuous, so you should be able to hike for 2-8 hours on steep mountain trails. Sight and stay with gorillas is for 1 hour. Return to the lodge and rest. If the evening is free, we can take a short cultural tour to nearby communities. Dinner and overnight at Kinigi Guest house or Virunga Lodge.
Day 6: Cultural and Historical Tour
Have early breakfast and visit the grave of Dian Fossey, situated at the former Karisoke Research Center where Dian spent some twenty years studying the Mountain Gorillas. The trek to the site is quite spectacular, passing through bamboo forest and afro-montane habitats, criss-crossed trails with tracks of forest buffalo and elephant! You may see all sorts of wildlife as you make our way up and down to Karisoke, nestled between the volcanic peaks of Karismbi and Visoke. Overnight at Kinigi Guest House or Virunga Lodge.
Day 7: Second Gorilla Tracking Excursion; Parc National des Volcans
Have early breakfast and assemble again at Kinigi Headquarters. You can visit a different Gorilla group or go back for the previous group. Relax in the afternoon as we wait for Cocktails, have dinner with Veterinarians from the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project, and acknowledge us about ongoing efforts to protect the Mountain Gorillas.

Day 8: Parc National des volcans – Kigali – Departure
Have a nice relaxed final morning, where we can just soak in the ambiance of the place, reflect back upon the adventures of our past week, and pack. Depending on our flight schedules we may have lunch at the Lodge and then depart for Kigali for your return flight
